ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN 3
Assignment 2 PROJECT 2A: THE DISCOVERY CENTRE (GENIUS LOCI)
In the second assignment of Architectural Design III, titled "The Discovery Center (Genius Loci) - Site Analysis, Site Response, and Design Concept," students are tasked with designing a Discovery Center in Kampung Morten, Malacca. The project emphasizes the importance of understanding the 'genius loci'—the spirit of the place—by considering society, culture, history, and landscape. Students will engage in site analysis, both intuitively and quantitatively, to inform their architectural concepts, with an emphasis on responding to the specific characteristics and meaning of the site. The project involves group work, with tasks divided among team members, culminating in a series of presentations and a physical model that contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the site and its context.
REFLECTION
In our "Discovery Center" project, we once more leaned on "Discipline Specific Knowledge," delving into the site's spirit—its Genius Loci. Our design approach was shaped by "Thinking and Problem Solving Skills" as we unraveled the layers of Malacca's history and culture, crafting an architecture that spoke to both. "Communication Skills" were crucial in articulating our site analysis and design responses, demanding clarity in our narrative and model presentations. This assignment enhanced our ability to apply knowledge, solve complex problems, and communicate our architectural concepts succinctly.
