BUILDING CONSTRUCTION & MATERIALS

Assignment 2 : CONSTRUCTION DETAILING OF BUILDING ELEMENTS

In the Construction Detailing assignment for the Building Construction and Materials module, I had the opportunity to enhance my understanding of construction elements, specifically focusing on timber construction. Working in a group, we were assigned to create detailed construction drawings and a physical model for a double-storey terraced house using timber as the primary construction material. Our drawings and model reflected the intricate details of timber construction, including walls, doors, floors, and other elements. This assignment provided valuable hands-on experience in producing technical drawings and deepened our understanding of the practical aspects of construction using timber materials.

REFLECTION

In the Construction Detailing assignment for the Building Construction and Materials module, our group had the opportunity to explore the intricacies of timber construction and develop a comprehensive understanding of its application in building design. This project allowed us to collaborate and showcase our collective knowledge and skills in creating detailed technical drawings and constructing a physical model using timber as the primary construction material.

Throughout the assignment, the key TGCs that influenced our approach were "Discipline Specific Knowledge" (1.1 Able to put theories into practice), "Thinking and Problem Solving skills" (3.1 Think critically and creatively, 3.2 Define and analyze problems to arrive at effective solutions), and "Communication Skills" (4.1 Communicate appropriately in various settings and modes). By working together as a group, we were able to pool our theoretical knowledge, critical thinking abilities, and communication skills to develop accurate and precise technical drawings that demonstrated a deep understanding of timber construction.

The collaborative nature of this project allowed us to divide responsibilities and leverage each other's strengths. We utilized effective communication channels to coordinate our efforts, ensuring that our technical drawings were consistent and aligned with the construction details and specifications. Through active problem-solving and continuous feedback, we addressed complex construction issues and refined our design solutions to achieve optimal results.

By working on this group project, we acquired valuable skills in construction detailing and developed a deeper understanding of timber as a construction material. The assignment provided us with an opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge into practical applications, think critically to solve construction-related challenges, and communicate our design ideas effectively as a team.

TGCs that I have acquired are

  • 1.1 Able to put theories into practice.

  • 3.1 Think critically and creatively.

  • 3.2 Define and analyze problems to arrive at effective solutions.

  • 4.1 Communicate appropriately in various settings and modes.
