ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN 2
Assignment 2 : DESIGNING WITH ARCHITECTURAL PRINCIPLES + MATERIALITY : CONTEMPLATIVE PAVILLION
In the second project, we are building upon what we learned in the first assignment about diagrams and architectural principles. Our task now is to take those principles and apply them in a practical way. We are challenged to create a Contemplative Pavilion, a space for individual contemplation that enhances the connection between humans and nature. We will be exploring different aspects, such as researching a hypothetical tropical setting, diving deeper into architectural principles, and understanding how materials and crafting techniques affect the design. The project emphasizes the use of drawings and models as important tools in the design process. Through this project, we aim to showcase our ability to apply what we have learned, demonstrate our understanding of materials and detailing, and create meaningful and engaging spaces that promote a deeper connection with the environment.
DESIGN PROCESS SKETCH JOURNAL (DPSJ)
Throughout the design process of the Pavilion, I engaged in comprehensive research and exploration. I developed multiple design concepts, refining them based on feedback and iteration. Utilizing sketches and initial massing models, I aimed to create a visually pleasing Pavilion that harmoniously integrates with its tropical environment. The final design embodies architectural principles and demonstrates an understanding of materials, construction techniques, and spatial experiences. Through a meticulous design process, I have crafted a contemplative space that offers a serene sanctuary for individuals to connect with nature and find inner peace.
MOCK MODELS
MOCK MODEL 1
MOCK MODEL 2
MOCK MODEL 3
During the discussion of our Pavilion design, my team and I proposed three mock models to our tutor for feedback and advice. Each model represented a unique concept and design approach that we had developed. We sought the tutor's guidance to determine which concept would be most suitable and feasible for our project. This interactive session allowed us to engage in a constructive dialogue, receiving valuable input on the viability and effectiveness of our design ideas. Based on the tutor's insights, we refined and selected the most promising concept, ensuring it aligned with our vision while being practical and achievable.
FINAL PRODUCT
REFLECTION
One of the key TGCs that influenced our approach in the second assignment was "Thinking and Problem Solving skills" (3.1 Think critically and creatively, 3.2 Define and analyze problems to arrive at effective solutions). As a team project, we were challenged to think critically and creatively to address the design challenges of the Contemplative Pavilion. We had to define and analyze problems, explore innovative design approaches, and ensure that our design fostered contemplation and a harmonious connection with nature.
Another important TGC that played a significant role in our project was "Discipline Specific Knowledge" (1.1 Able to put theories into practice). We were able to apply the architectural theories and knowledge we have acquired to inform our design decisions. This allowed us to create a Contemplative Pavilion that not only met user requirements but also demonstrated a strong foundation in architectural principles.
Furthermore, the TGC "Interpersonal Skills" (5.1 Understand team dynamics and mobilize the power of teams) was essential in this team project. Collaborating effectively as a team required us to understand and leverage the strengths and dynamics of our team members. Through effective communication, coordination, and collective decision-making, we were able to bring together our individual ideas and skills to create a cohesive and successful design for the Contemplative Pavilion.
TGCs that I have acquired are
