ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN 2
Assignment 3 : Designing with Architectural Principles + Materiality + Context + User:
THE TROPICAL SANCTUARY
In the third project, we are tasked with designing a Tropical Sanctuary at Taman Botani Negara Shah Alam (TBNSA). This sanctuary should not only provide a space for contemplation but also include areas for resting, discussion, and other activities. With a maximum built-up space of 100 square meters, the design must accommodate two people comfortably for a short stay. Our focus will be on creating a design that harmonizes with the tropical site context, considering architectural principles, materiality, and constructability to deliver a memorable spatial experience. Through this project, we aim to further develop our understanding of architectural concepts, spatial organization, and the relationship between users, context, and architectural elements. By incorporating site-specific analysis and design intentions, we seek to create an architecture that is not only functional but also enhances the natural beauty of the landscape.
During the first workshop of the third assignment, we focused on site data collection and analysis for the design of our Tropical Sanctuary. Through comprehensive documentation and on-site observations, we gathered information on the site layout, climatic conditions, natural features, existing structures, circulation patterns, and human activities. This data served as the foundation for our design process, allowing us to understand the site's unique characteristics and make informed design decisions. By examining the site's topography, orientation, and ecological aspects, we gained insights into how the Tropical Sanctuary could be integrated harmoniously within the site. This workshop provided us with valuable knowledge and skills to navigate the site context and lay the groundwork for the development of our design.
In the second workshop of the third assignment, we had the opportunity to showcase our latest work to our tutors, seeking validation and guidance to ensure we were on the right track. We presented our plan and section drawings of the Tropical Sanctuary, aiming to verify the accuracy of our section drawing, check for any space planning or technical drawing issues, and receive feedback on any necessary modifications. This session allowed us to receive valuable insights from our tutors, ensuring that our drawings aligned with the design requirements and helped us refine our work further.
Throughout the design process of the Tropical Sanctuary, I followed a systematic approach, beginning with extensive research on the site and user requirements. I developed multiple design concepts, refining them based on feedback from my tutors. Using sketches and initial massing models, I focused on creating a harmonious relationship between the sanctuary and its natural surroundings, considering site responses and space planning figures. The final design incorporates the principles of architecture and corresponds with the site context, resulting in a thoughtfully developed Tropical Sanctuary.
The Naturefold presentation board serves to visually present and explain the design process and key features of the Naturefold structure. Through three A1 papers, it provides an overview of the design concept, site analysis, and user requirements. The board includes sketches, diagrams, and renderings that demonstrate the integration of Naturefold with its natural surroundings. Additionally, orthographic drawings showcase the design elements and spatial arrangement of the structure. Overall, the Naturefold presentation board effectively communicates the design concept and highlights the important aspects of the project.
The collection of photographs from the final model of Naturefold offers viewers a closer look at the design's intricate details and provides a comprehensive view of the overall composition. The images allow viewers to appreciate the finer details while also gaining a better understanding of the design's overall form and aesthetics. Additionally, the inclusion of simulated sunrise and sunset adds a realistic touch, replicating the site's actual sun path.
REFLECTION
In our third assignment, we were tasked with designing a Tropical Sanctuary at Taman Botani Negara Shah Alam (TBNSA). This individual project provided us with the opportunity to showcase our creativity and apply the architectural principles and design concepts we have learned throughout our studies. It allowed us to take ownership of the entire design process and explore our personal design preferences and style.

One of the key TGCs that influenced our approach was "Intrapersonal Skills" (6.2 Reflection on one's actions and learning). This TGC encouraged us to reflect on our own design choices, evaluate our design solutions, and continuously learn and improve our architectural skills. It allowed us to develop a deeper understanding of our own design process, critically assess our work, and identify areas for personal growth and development.

Another important TGC that played a significant role in this individual project was "Thinking and Problem Solving skills" (3.1 Think critically and creatively, 3.2 Define and analyze problems to arrive at effective solutions). We were challenged to think critically and creatively to address the design challenges presented by the Tropical Sanctuary. We had to define and analyze problems, explore innovative design approaches, and arrive at effective solutions that integrated seamlessly with the site context and user requirements.

Additionally, the TGC "Discipline Specific Knowledge" (1.1 Able to put theories into practice) was crucial in this project. We were able to apply the architectural theories and knowledge we have acquired to inform our design decisions. This allowed us to create a Tropical Sanctuary that not only met user requirements but also demonstrated a strong foundation in architectural principles.
